The job, training & your career at STA Travel

The job

As a STA Travel Adviser or Branch Sales Manager, selling travel will be your main focus so you’ll need to spend a lot of time with your customers understanding their travel needs and looking for suitable solutions. Customer service is also very important to us and you’ll need to be ready and willing to go the extra mile for your travellers.

Your day will be busy and varied - no two days will ever be the same. Working as a STA Travel Adviser or Branch Sales Manager is not for the faint hearted!  It’s hard work, the hours can be long and it’s a steep learning curve for the first 6 months, but it’s fun! You’ll meet some great people and don’t forget you’re helping make peoples dreams come true by sending them off to experience other countries and cultures around the world!

The role of a Branch Sales Manager (BSM) also includes coaching and motivating staff so you'll also need to demonstrate your leadership skills to ensure your branch runs smoothly. You'll also get the chance to conduct local area marketing and even local events depending on your branch!

The training

If you’ve got what it takes then we’ll equip you with all the tools you’ll need to be a savvy and very successful Travel Adviser.  All of our trainers have at one time been Travel Advisers themselves so they not only teach you how to use the systems, but also give you their general advice on how to sell, and how to make a lot of money.

Training starts when you commence employment with STA Travel, and is ongoing. We believe there is no limit to what you can learn.  The training program is designed to keep you motivated, and to keep you abreast of the ongoing travel industry changes.

ATTTO training

STA Travel works with ATTTO to provide a workplace training programme, allowing all new staff to work towards national qualifications while still working in the branch.  We pay you to get qualified!

The benefits:

  • Increased motivation, confidence and sense of direction
  • Attainment of national qualifications
  • Cost effective – there is no need to have a student loan or have to attend an expensive independent travel school provider
All new employees are automatically enrolled on this program and the cost of registration is paid by the company.

STA Travel career progression

We’re committed to providing promotional opportunities and career paths for all employees.  We want to ensure that we’re providing our people with every opportunity to grow and develop and we’ll always endeavour to fill vacant positions from within the company.

  1. Travel Adviser
  2. Trainee Manager
  3. Branch Manager (small branch)
  4. Branch Manager (larger branch)
  5. Head Office (Air Product, Land Product, Marketing, HR/Training etc)

FAQs about applying for a job at STA Travel

Do I need formal travel-related qualification?
While completing a travel course is advantageous, it’s not essential.  A travel course will give you a solid understanding of the role of a Travel Adviser and how to operate the various booking systems.

I haven’t worked in the industry before, do you only look for people with industry experience?
No, you don’t need to have industry experience in order to work with STA Travel as a Travel Adviser.  We look for people with the ability to sell, proven customer service experience, and people who have been travellers themselves.  “We know because we go”. From there we will provide ongoing training from the time you commence employment with STA Travel.

Which branch will I be working in?
All of our Travel Advisers are employed for the region.   This means that we can’t necessarily guarantee you will be working in the closest branch to your home, it just depends on where the vacancies exist.

How much will I earn?
Honestly, as much as you like. Our advisers work in a retail sales environment, and therefore are rewarded for their sales. The more you sell the more you earn. The STA Travel Reward and Recognition program is designed to keep you motivated to sell travel and provide consistently high levels of service to your customers.Your salary will consist of monthly, quarterly and annual incentives that are based on both individual and team performance, as well as your base salary. Essentially, the sky is the limit. It is really up to you how quickly you overcome the hurdle of the steep learning curve, and how much you want to sell.

What benefits will I get?
There are plenty of employee benefits to be had including discounted travel benefits, educational participation including educational leave, staff counselling service, emergency loan assistance, study grant assistance, and we also throw you a great awards party each year!
