Volunteer as a Storyteller in Malawi

15 days

Spend two glorious, rewarding weeks spreading the written word throughout schools in Malawi! The Book Bus provides a mobile service and actively promotes literacy to underprivileged communities in Malawi. Using the spoken word, artwork, puppet-making and a host of other media, you will attempt to bring to life the worlds within storybooks to young school children. In a nutshell, your role will consist of telling or reading a story - or listening to the children read - and then helping them interpret that story in varied, creative ways. This may include puppets, painting or plays and children are not expected to be formally taught... so the magic is all up to you! About Malawi Malawi is the thirteenth poorest country in the world with an average literacy rate of just 63%. When the Book Bus outreach team visited the country's schools in 2010 the requests for books were overwhelming. Currently, available resources in Malawian schools average less than 1 textbook per student. This is your chance to make a real difference! About the Project: The Book Bus will work with schools in the Shire Valley and Blantyre areas of Malawi. Each school will have a designated "Book Bus Day" when volunteers like yourself spend the day at the school to provide resources, energy and inspiration to encourage the children to read. The Book Bus spends each weekday at a different community school. The program of activities is led by the Volunteer Crew members and might include story-telling, one-to-one help with reading, music, arts and crafts, structured play, drama, puppet shows and sports. The project also donates books and shows the teachers how to set up and run a Reading Club. The Book Bus revisits each school several times over a month to provide support and monitor each school's progress. Another important Book Bus benefit is that because English is the language of secondary school education in Malawi, the primary school children can practice speaking English so that they can progress to secondary level education more smoothly! About the Crew The Book Bus can't operate without a crew - it's their support that keeps the wheels turning! The crew travelling with the Book Bus includes the Book Bus Leader, a driver and up to sixteen Volunteer Crew members. Occasionally we'll be joined by special guests, who might include local storytellers and artists, well known UK children's authors, or even a film crew! You can sign up as a Volunteer Book Bus Crew member for anything from two weeks to two months Downtime The crew generally relaxes in the evenings. Sometimes an open evening will be hosted for the adults in the community to learn more about the Book Bus. Occasionally our hosts invite us to a local event. The weekends are your own - get away from it all, relax, or see something of Malawi's beautiful countryside. Activities are often organized as a group. What makes a good crew member? You do not need any teaching experience to join as a volunteer but the Book Bus does require you have enthusiasm and a desire to get involved. Some measure of artistic and/or musical talent (or at least a willingness to have a go!) will stand you in good stead, and if you are shy in company, be prepared to shed at least some of your inhibitions! The Book Bus crew members all share a positive outlook, the enjoyment of being part of a team and a real desire to make a difference.
  • Day 1

Once arrived in Blantyre, keep your eyes peeled for the bright yellow Book Bus t-shirt, sported by your friendly guide, waiting to meet you and transfer you back to the Book Bus Base. The rest of your day will be spent settling in, exploring the surroundings and getting to know the gregarious bunch of like-minded volunteers just itching to get started!

  • Day 2

After a hearty breakfast, it's down to business! Volunteers will have a project briefing and orientation then given free time to make a shopping list for the weekly groceries. The afternoon is free to prepare for the week ahead - and, of course, enjoy a bit of R&R by the pool under the sizzling Malawi sun

  • Day 3

The Books Bus wheels are set in motion! A glorious day in the life of a Book Bus volunteer begins bright and early with a 630 wake-up call to prepare, eat and wash up a scrumptious brekkie meal. It's then an hour of prep-time before boarding the bus at 8.30am to start the day's educational journey. The morning consists of four one-hour sessions with the school children, including short breaks for refreshments. Return to the Book Bus Base around 2pm for a late but well-deserved lunch, with plenty of time to mull over the meal and the exciting and often hilarious events of the day. After some afternoon free-time, the dinner roster heats up for some communal cooking, cleaning and conversation. The evening is then yours to do as you wish: explore the surroundings, challenge the others to a game of cards or sports... or simply spend some quality time with yourself!

  • Day 8

After a busy week aboard the Book Bus, enjoy a free weekend to do whatever you like! Take part in an organised group activity such as an excursion to the stunning Lake Malawi, the majestic Majete Wildlife reserve, or even a city tour of Blantyre!

  • Day 10

As Monday rolls around, another week of the book crusade begins! Just like the previous week, visit a different school each day as you and the other volunteers conduct reading, storytelling and creative arts sessions with the excited kiddies! For most of the children you will meet, the Book Bus is a whole new classroom experience: instead of 100 pupils per teacher they are in groups of 5 or 6 per volunteer. Everyone has a book to read and they can interpret the stories using paper, pencils, paints, puppetry and any other productive and creative medium you can dream up! Some volunteers have encouraged the children to enact dramas and musical events and even to write their own books!

  • Highlights

Highlights abound on this fantastic volunteer touring package! Read stories to enthralled and responsive school children, and use your creative skills to bring these stories to life! Explore this stunning African landscape aboard the travelling Book Bus, with plenty of personal time to make the journey really your own! Meet valuable new friends and experience ways of life far removed from your own home creature comforts!
