Why you need travel insurance
FIVE REASONS TO GET TRAVEL INSURANCE
Let’s be honest, even if you’re only travelling for a few days, if something unexpected happens while you’re away from home it can be expensive. Really expensive. And we’ve all heard the horror stories – from tsunamis to medical emergencies, or simply getting your passport stolen – it happens.
If you need some concrete examples of ‘what if’, here are our top five reasons to get travel insurance gathered from our STA Travel team’s experiences.
1. “I have never been so sick in all my life.”
Whether it’s dodgy street food, bad water or simply that your stomach can’t stomach foreign cuisine, when you get sick overseas you want to be able to get better quickly so you don’t waste your holiday lying in bed. Sam, our resident marketing guru here at STA Travel, was thankful for her travel insurance as it allowed her to get herself to hospital quickly, see an English-speaking doctor and get the required follow up care when she was in Europe. The average hospital emergency visit in the Netherlands is €250 – a cost that is easily covered by comprehensive travel insurance.
2. “I didn’t even notice my bag was opened... now I have no passport or cash.”
Pick-pocketers can strike even the most security conscious traveller. Their methods are getting more and more sophisticated, and often you are completely unaware your bag has even been opened and your precious items are gone. Jess, one of our Travel Experts, was admiring the gorgeous architecture in Spain when she reached into her bag for water and noticed it was unzipped. Luckily with her travel insurance policy, the 24 hour Allianz Global Assistance team helped her with how to report the crime and get her emergency travel documents sorted.
3. “I took ‘break a leg’ literally.”
While you might be aware of the things that could happen while you’re overseas, you rarely consider what might happen BEFORE you leave that could result in you not being able to go on your adventure. Nat, a STA Travel store manager, was planning to head away on an exciting trip to South America, but a hike in the Waitakere Ranges before departure resulted in a broken ankle. Luckily, as she had purchased travel insurance when she booked her flights, she was covered for all non-refundable cancellation charges and could re-book her trip for a few months time.
4. “My iPhone swirled away down the toilet.”
Last thing you knew, your phone was tucked safely in your back pocket... now it’s underwater and you aren’t keen to retrieve it! It sounds strange but it happens more than you’d expect. STA Travel’s Rhiannon was stoked she had travel insurance to cover the cost of a new mobile phone after her lavatory incident on her recent trip to Aussie – especially with the ‘new for old’ benefit offered in her plan.
5. “It was just a sore hip.”
When you’re travelling for a long time or on your Big OE, you want to have insurance for all sorts of reasons. On Anna’s Summer Camp USA experience she had a bit of a sore hip, so just to be sure, she went with the camp doctor down to the local hospital. US$2000 later she’d had a raft of procedures and was sent home with anti-inflammatory pills, Ibuprofen... and a bouncy credit card. Thankful for her insurance plan covering working holidays, she was able to put in a claim and get her money back quick enough for her post-camp trip to Canada.
