Destination Inspiration

After years of being closed to foreigners Myanmar, or Burma as it's often still called, is a world away from neighbouring tourist favourites. The crowds have yet to reach this fascinating nation, sandwiched amidst India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand and home to more than 100 ethnic groups. The incredible temples of Bagan are a breathtaking site, as are the shimmering golden temples of Yangon and endless other Buddhist monuments. Add to this beautiful countryside and charming locals and you've got yourself a trip you'll never forget.

Travelling to Myanmar

Yangon international airport will be the entry point for most visitors to the country with various airlines connecting to the city. Alternatively some tours will take you overland via Thailand or China. There are so many exciting places to visit in Myanmar, from its incredible natural scenery and stunning untouched coastline to bustling towns and ancient Buddhist temples. Check out a few of our favourites below and get in touch with our Travel Experts for more information.

Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and home to an incredible collection of Buddhist pagodas. Its highlight is the Shwedagon Paya, a dramatic golden temple that draws thousands of pilgrims every year. Add to that a dash of colonial architecture, exciting Bogyoke Market, Sule and Botataung religious monuments and more, and you've got yourself a fascinating stop.

Lake Inle

Serene Inle is becoming a favourite amongst those who make the journey to Myanmar. This large lake (nearly 14 miles long) is home to traditional floating villages and fishing communities. The unique way the locals steer their boats is fascinating and a chance to see a centuries old tradition. As well as this Inle is a centre for hand-woven textiles and known for its focus on lotus fabric.

Once an ancient city, Bagan is a sensational collection of over 2,000 Buddhist moments that spread out for miles - 26 to be precise. Able to rival even the highest regarded archaeological sites in the world, Bagan, which dates back nearly 1,000 years, is a must for any visit to the country. And as of yet the tourist numbers don't match those of similar sites in the world, so get in there quick!

Mandalay Hill is a great place for views and to get your bearings of this large city. Bustling Mandalay is a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of everyday life in Myanmar and although it may not be as initially beautiful as other places in South East Asia, there are some great places to visit. Mandalay Palace is a great stop, as is impressive Kuthodaw Pagoda, home to the world's largest book!
