Flights to Kathmandu are available from the UK via connecting airports such as Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and New Delhi, and special student/youth fares are available with STA Travel. Many adventure tours combine travel in India and Nepal so borders will be crossed overland. Visas are normally required for travel to Nepal so be sure to check all relevant documentation needed in advance.

When to Visit Nepal

Like elsewhere in the region, Nepal experiences monsoon rains during the summer months, mainly at night, and clouds often hide the stunning views the country is so famous for. However, accommodation prices drop so great for those of you on a budget. The autumn months bring clear skies and warm temperatures making it a popular time to attempt Everest and Annapurna base camps. Winter also sees clear days however the nights are very cold. Spring is warm with the occasional rain shower. Whatever time of year you visit however, take a mixture of warm and cold weather clothing as temperatures can alter dramatically depending on area and altitude.

The Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu is a vibrant city and the popular Thamel area is perfect for all your backpacker needs. Be sure to climb to amazing Swayambhunath temple which boasts great views across Kathmandu Valley, and Boudhanath Stupa (Asia's biggest) is another dramatic icon. The city's central square, Durbar, is like stepping back in time, as are the nearby towns of Patan and Bhaktapur - both well worth the visit.
