Travelling to Sri Lanka

Direct flights are available between the UK and Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital city and entry point, and many other well known airlines travel via cities such as Dubai, Doha and Mumbai. STA Travel offer special student/youth fares with some airlines, meaning you can save a few bob too - perfect! Visas are usually needed for travel to Sri Lanka so be sure to check all document requirements in advance. The country is of a manageable size, meaning that it's possible to see the highlights of Sri Lanka on a two week trip, making it an ideal alternative holiday destination.

Like in other countries in the region, the Monsoon makes an appearance in Sri Lanka every year. The rain varies however depending on location. The south and west coast and hills experience rains from May to August. The north and east however receive rains from December to March. Around this the weather is generally stable, and there can be exceptions to the rule even during the Monsoon. Average temperatures are in the high twenties on the coast and high teens in the hills. It's worth nothing that Sri Lankan new year falls in April and so accommodation and transport get very booked up this time.

Known as the cultural centre of Sri Lanka, Kandy has a beautiful setting on a lake in the central hills. Oozing with history and charm, it was once the old capital. Today, from temples and museums to colourful streets and enticing shops it's a perfect stop for any Sri Lankan trip. Explore nearby tea plantations or the topical rainforest and take a ride on the picturesque railway.

The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura are one of Asia's top historic and architectural complexes. From huge stupas to crumbling temples and palaces, this is a fascinating insight into Sri Lanka's past. Abandoned for centuries and left to the grips of the jungle, Anuradhapura was uncovered again in the late 19th century and even today still has a mysterious, Jungle Book feel to it.
